What is X-pedagogy ?
At Lidingö folkhigh school, we have for many years created and found a generative term for a pedagogy rooted in Freire's liberating education and experience-based course structure at the training programme for our youth workers. We call it the X-pedagogy.
In the past 20 years changes in the environment and the prevailing cultural and social situation has made it necessary to find relevant understanding frameworks and has stimulated to necessary educational development and reflection.
In a time of huge number of impressions and demands for their own choices in life's questions, many young people feel both empty and filled to the brim of his/her ‘inner room’ at the same time. We believe it is important to challenge, develop and broaden the often fragmentary experiences that many carry around.

We are all challenged to search several methods in the pedagogical work . There is a need to use all senses of the body when learning, where experience is the starting point for knowledge, insights, understanding and development. X-pedagogy will meet this need.
There are at least four X:es to consider;
-eXperience -
- eXistential -
-eXperimental -
-eXpressive - |
as a starting point for reflexion and analyses
the vital questions of life as driving force for learning
testing and risk taking, creativity and crossover as ways of searching for
knowledge and truth
the need to authentically express and form our lives and our knowledge
with various languages |
X-pedagogy is not a concept or a collection of exercises or techniques that can be copied or easily described. It is the idea of the X-pedagogy that each situation (age, context, etc.) is challenging the pedagogical approach and courage to let the four X:es to have an impact on frames and conditions for the learning process.
X-pedagogy emphasizes the art of play and the role and importance of development and learning. Playfulness is not the contrary to seriousness - it is another input to knowledge. In the X-pedagogy we play very seriously. Spontaneity and impulses have their rightful place in the beginning of the processes, while the reflection and ‘after reading’ will be followed and by then will be loaded with experiences that stimulate learning.
The importance of emotions in learning processes has increasingly emerged and been given recognition. The free creative nature is about an exploratory approach where the teacher walks by, ensures that there is security and a clear framework and brings good working atmosphere by trusting the processes. The expressive and experimental features encourage the student to boldly express themselves, with different sensual languages, to try to follow their impulses and explore what emerges. Values about right and wrong are uninteresting if they hinder the exploration. Instead everything that emerges will be a basis for further studies and challenges. X-pedagogy puts people in learning processes first.
The X-pedagogical existential basis always plays some "musical loops" which ask the questions, "what's the point?", "Who am I?", "Who are you?" And "What is knowledge?" And as a teacher, - yes, as a X-pedagogue, the task is more about being a responsive, flexible tutor with a well-stocked tool box on wheels, that is in motion and having the courage to experiment yourself.
